First, stay safe

If you smell burning, see scorching or there is water near electrics, switch off the main switch at the consumer unit if it is safe to reach. Do not touch damaged fittings. If there is fire, call 999.

Power cut or tripped switch?

If neighbours are also without power, it is a network fault — call 105 to reach UK Power Networks. If only your home is affected, check the consumer unit. A tripped RCD that will not reset usually means a faulty appliance or circuit: unplug everything, reset, then plug appliances back in one by one to find the culprit.

What an emergency call-out costs
